The giveaway for real khaddar is the slub, the uneven thickening in the yarn that comes from handloom weaving. Look closely and you can see it varies along the length of the cloth. A printed imitation has a slub pattern that repeats, because it was printed.
The shawl comes fringed rather than hemmed, knotted at the ends the way it comes off the loom. Moss sits well against both black and off-white, so the three pieces do not have to be worn together.
